===== PROFESSIONAL LIFE =====

Currently, I'm working at Google as an illustrator and web designer. I've been there for almost three years now.

Speaking of Google, our team is hiring! So if you are a free hand artist who can work in Photoshop, Painter, and Illustrator, check out our job listing:

===== PERSONAL PROJECTS / UPDATES =====
I've gone through and deleted some of my older works here. I'm thinking I want to present myself a little more professionally here so I went through and deleted my old student work. I will be doing the same on some other sites I'm on. But I have a few newer pieces that I might be posting here.

I am taking a break from my animation projects until I can complete my web dev platform which I will be reusing on multiple websites. I expect to be done by summer. At that time I will look into revisiting some of my animation projects.

PaperDemon is the base for my web dev platform and I've been making regular improvements and feature additions over the past 6 months. This is my main project at the moment.

Just a quick update on things going on in my life...

In short, my life is going really well.

I'm in my final year in the illustration program at San Jose State University and I'm currently interning as a Web Specialist at a search engine company. There I create icons, edit html pages, and draw doodles. After I graduate, I will be working there as a full time employee. It's an awesome place. Food is free. It's good to have a job lined up before graduation :)

I haven't been drawing too much lately. My art abilities are probably suffering from the lack of drawing activity. I seem to have lost interest. My interest will return eventually...

My free time has mostly been spent programming/maintaining the online art and writing community PaperDemon.com which has grown to over 1,000 members. Everyday there's something new to see or talk about and we are always adding new features and expanding old ones. It's my pride and joy. We recently grew big enough that we had to move to a dedicated server. At the time I am writing this journal entry we have 6700+ art submissions and 1000+ writing submissions. I've some how managed to become quite obsessive about PHP programming. I can't tear myself away from my computer.

Speaking of computers, my internship pays well enough that I was able to do a major computer upgrade. Intel Core Duo, 2GB ram, 300GB hard drive. Ive also got two 20.1 inch wide screen flat panel monitors so I have lots of screen space. Its really essential for multitasking.

My work on my DBZ parody show, Zarbon's Masterpiece Theater, has been sporadic. And work on Surviving Together has been practicly non-existant. I'm not dropping the project, but I am taking an indefinate break from it until I can get myself back in the art groove.

I have a tendancy of getting myself into so many projects that it becomes impossible to finish them all.

All in all, life is good.

I am indefinately closed to all requests and commissions. Check my personal blog, BogusRed.net, for more up to date information on commissions, my life, and more. Because most likely, I wont be posting another journal entry for another year based on my current track record. You'll also find my piano music there which has also been posted on OC Remix:

Hello. You are probably viewing this Journal entry from my profile. I'll let you know right now that I don't use my DA account all too often. Mostly I'm active on another art community based website called PaperDemon.com. I get a lot more comments and feedback there than any other site so that's where I spend more of my time (and also because I own the site lol). More of my artwork can be found there:

At the time of this posting, Zarbon's Masterpiece Theater has reached Episode 11. Be sure to check it out:

Below are some clubs that I think I'm a member of. I'm not very active though so I'm probably not on their member lists anymore ahahah.

School is over but studying isn't. This summer I will be studying art hard just as I did on winter break. I've already made my list of things to study.

This weekend is FanimeCon but just as I was getting ready to leave for my staff shift at the Con, my mom noticed my face was all flushed. I had a fever. I caught her cold/flu. So no FanimeCon for me >.<!!!! It sucks! I told all of my friends I'd be there and I commited to being on staff. Curses!

Anyway, I guess that leaves me time to draw. Keep an eye out for art uploads.

:icondbyaoi:
So, today was a meeting for all the staffers at Fanime Con (an anime convention in california that starts next weekend). anyway, I saw someone that I hadn't seen in like three years. He draws too and when I first knew him, I really felt beneath him. you know that feeling when your friend is really really good at drawing and you suck?

Anyway, now after starting to really learn how to draw, I don't feel that way any more when I look at his work. So I saw him today and he showed me a drawing of his on a poster for the convention and I really really really wanted to show him what he needed to do to get it right. I asked him to critique his own work first and I could tell by his drawing and by the way he crited his own piece, he didn't really know much about figure drawing.

It's like everything I did before art school was pretty much a waste because I had to unlearn it all and start over anyway. I just didn't want to see this guy (or anyone else for that matter) do the same. It's for the most part a waste of time. All of that drawing for YEARS was almost useless. It's time to get serious and put that time toward really learning.

I wanted to teach him what I've learned. I'm so excited about drawing that I want to tell everyone else how to draw and people don't like that >.< So anyway, I was all upset about it when I came home and my mom told me to stop being an evangelist. I can't go around "saving" everyone unless they ask to be "saved." So, no more critiques unless YOU ask me and it's in person. I don't think anyone can teach drawing through the internet unless it involves live video stream or something.

I must learn to bite my tongue!

Working heavily on my rendering assignment for my intermediate illustration class. I've got finals right now.

Sorry I haven't been around the past few weeks. I got busy with art homework and other things like the Final Fantasy Dear Friends concert =) Anyway, nothing really interesting to post these days. In a week and a half I should have my color rendering done and ready for upload. I'll be back later with new art to post.
Ok, I've joined a club! They've invited me to join so I did, ^___^
The dbyaoi club! Woo hoo!

Right now I'm working on an awsome Final Fantasy VII parody but it won't be done for quite some time. =(

I noticed a lot of people taking requests. So, at this moment I am officially open for requests. I'm only taking one right now and I'd like it to be a Dragonball Z yaoi pic (to submit to dbyaoi). Any ideas? I'll take whoever has the best idea.

I feel very passionate about my art education. I love the teachers and the curriculum and I love that I am learning so much. My biggest reason for harsh critiques is because I want people to get to that level where they realize that they know nothing and have to start COMPLETELY over. You have to completely unlearn everything you thaught you knew about drawing and follow a different method. I'm posting this journal entry because of the response I got from :iconredaurora: when I crited her "Danced - Inked" piece. Below is the original conversation that went on with signitures, dates, etc. removed:

**************
:iconbogusred:
so why were you scanning your driver's licence?

anyway, on with the crit... you've got some nice rhythms happening there but the torso is too long and the waist is too thin. the knees also could use some work. i like the piece though.
--
:iconredaurora:
I was scanning my driver's license 'cause I needed it for insurance information, heh... silly me.

Thanks for the critique, but I had actually made the waist long and kinda thin on purpose, it just seemed right for the style I was going for
--
:iconbogusred:
it's ok if you make it longer but you have to compensate for the length by use of the rhythms. you have to make it so that people don't react to the drawing by saying "woah the waist is too skinny and the torse is too long." make it long and slender but with grace.
--
:iconredaurora:
Okay... well thanks anyway.
--
:iconilljerrypants:
WTH! are you talking about i consider this one of the best Angels i've seen! i love the nice smooth curves on her! and the face expression too! +Fav!
--
:iconbogusred:
i'm not saying she isn't graceful. I'm saying she's not graceful enough. the torso is stiff. look i've been studying figure drawing intensly with some of the best teachers out there. my figure drawing teacher was the animation director on space jam and is one of the best animators in the industry. for the past year and a half i've been studying figure drawing and I can tell you there are fundamental issues with this drawing. it's not something that everyone can pick up on. you have to work your ass off to learn this stuff and have really good teachers (which are really hard to find). if you want to be mediocre, fine, don't listen to my crits. but i know what i'm talking about. if you want to be the best instead of mediocre, work your but off learning to figure draw and then you can do anything. figure drawing is all about learning gesture, rhythm, construction, anatomy, and tone. with those skills, you can draw anything.
--
:iconilljerrypants:
OK but I have no idea what your saying ......you used to may big words for me to comprehend.... hold on it might take a while!
--
:iconbogusred:
You'd probably have to study figure drawing to understand it. It takes years for this stuff to sink in.
--
:iconredaurora:
It might just be me, or maybe the fact that it's in my gallery, but I find your comment to be somewhat offensive. It's cool if you want to leave critiques, but to refer to someone [and I mean anyone at all] as 'mediocre' for not agreeing with what you have to say is just a little... arrogant, perhaps? Ignorant?
I've checked out your gallery, and you're good!-- but not so good that you can say something like: "If you want to be mediocre, fine, don't listen to my crits." It comes off as being kind of rude, really.
And if I should be shoving my foot into my mouth right now, please-- by all means-- let me know.
--
:iconbogusred:
Sorry, I'm not saying that I'm good and your mediocre. And I'm also not trying to be rude. I'm just trying to give you a reality check. When I first started art school I was quite cocky and thaught that I knew a lot about drawing. Then I got the shock of my life. By realizing just how little I know, I was able to START OVER. I had to unlearn everything that I thaught I knew about drawing and start completely over. My story is not unique. Everyone who has started drawing on their own without being taught the traditional way of drawing has to go through the same thing. By realizing that I knew nothing, I was able to actually start learning. I learned more about drawing in one year than most artists learn in their life time. This is not because I'm special. It's because I am at a great school with awsome teachers who weren't afraid to push me and bring my whole world down. It's like a slap in the face, but a loving slap in the face. They do it with love. They want the students to succeed. I couldn't get better without realizing that I knew absolutely NOTHING. That's what I'm trying to do for you. Once you get that dose of reality, you can start learning to draw the successful way.
I'm not trying to say that I'm better than you or anything. I am doing this because I want to see you succeed. I want you to get that JOLT of reality. I would not have submitted a crit if I didn't like your piece. I liked the concept but the drawing skills need work. I just want you to get better. I'm speaking out of experience and am full of passion trying to get people to realize what I have, "I know nothing." And then start from there to build your knowledge.
I hope you realize just how important this concept is. The ones who don't get that shock will only go so far in their drawing ability and won't be able to get any further. I just wish I could explain this in person. PLEASE understand that this isn't supposed to be an insult. It's like a shot of medicine that may hurt at first but in the end will make you better. Do you honestly believe that I would be sitting here, typing these crits just to attack you and make myself feel better by puting you down? I'm here because I want people to experience what I have experienced. I feel very passionate about it. I admit that my ego gets in the way sometimes and I am trying my best to try and make these crits both have the SHOCK they need and not be insulting. It's easier for my teachers to do because they are successful and have their resume's, films, and illustrations to back them up. I am still just learning and I am no where near their level of expertise. The proof though is in the results. San Jose State is known in the animation industry as having one of the best programs in the world because of the wake up call given to the students by the teachers. I really hope this all sinks in. For your own career's sake.
*************************************
{ end of comments }

Look, I know that I'm being hard on many of the critiques I do. I know they may sound rude and that part is my fault. I'll try my best to still give the same critique but without insulting. I really don't want to offend people. I just want people to understand. Always getting "nice job!" and "wow you're amazing" is not going to push you to get better at drawing. You have to surround yourself with competition. That's another thing that makes my experience in school more worth while. We go out to draw together, then you look over someone's shoulder and get a peak at their sketchbook and say to yourself, "holy crap! I better get my butt in gear! This guy is really good. I need to be good like him!"
Look, in the end, if you don't take a minute to think about my crits, then only I will benifit, it's less competition for me once I finish school and go out into the industry. But if I really wanted that to happen, why would I tell you?
PLEASE share with me your comments. If you think my crits are too harsh, let me know how I can make them better.
Stuff I've learned about drawing (mostly from college professors)
Most of this is just reminders to myself so much of it wont be understood by most people unless you've taken classes with the same professors.

EVERYTHING on this list is equally important! If you want to know more about something, ask me and maybe I can explain it better.

Notes about my professors ::
John Clapp is a childrens book illustrator and has been my teacher for beginning and intermediate illustration. www.johnclapp.com
Sheldon Borenstein was a professional animator and was animation director on Space Jam. He has been an animator on movies like Furn Gully (a favorite of mine), Rover Dangerfield, Bebe's Kids, and several more. Now he has his own school in LA, sells his work in galleries, and is my figure drawing teacher at the college I attend.
Today I joined deviantart at the request of some random person on my website. So here I am. Oh yeah, and I got a new car. it's a saturn ion. woo hoo! I'm making new friends already and i've only been here less than one day. this is fun.
